For example: when building the pdflatex.fmt file pdftex finds it and the pdflatex.log file reports: EC Classic Latin hyphenation patterns (/usr/local/texlive/2019/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/conversions/conv-utf8 -ec.tex) (/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/tex/hyph-la-x-cl assic.tex)) On the opposite when doing the correspondign operation with uptex, the corresponding uplatex.log file reports: EC Classic Latin hyphenation patterns ! I can't find file `hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex'. l.29???????? \input hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex (Press Enter to retry, or Control-D to exit) Please type another input file name: ! Emergency stop. l.29???????? \input hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex End of file on the terminal! and the creation of the format fails. I have no idea where the glitch is, but this is what happens. Thank you for the report. It is strange, and unfortunately I don?t have time to investigate it right now; I?ll try to look into it within the next few weeks. And, your statement > apparently the file hyph-la-x-classic.tex file exists but > some engines do not foind it. is not so clear. As uptex reports, it is going to find "hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex" not "hyph-la-x-classic.tex". And, I guess, the problem (which might be specific to you) lies in your incomplete installation of hyph-la-... files. You have your own _local_ file /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/tex/hyph-la-x-classic.tex which is not officially distributed in TeX Live, right? Then, I guess you should also have your own _local_ file /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/ptex/hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex which is not officially distributed in TeX Live. I just got a suggestion from Google that "hyph-la-x-classic.ec.tex" can be obtained from https://github.com/gregorio-project/hyphen-la/tree/master/patterns/tex Just now I noticed that in the current TeX Live, both "hyph-la-x-liturgic.tex" and "hyph-la-x-classic.tex" are available under texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/tex but only "hyph-la-x-liturgic.ec.tex" is available under texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/ptex which seems strange to me. Sorry I'm not at home right now and I could not reproduce the error reported by Claudio last night.
