Well, as it turned out, standard patgen *is* capable of processing
UTF-8 directly.  However, it is still limited to at most 247 different
entities.  Since only few alphabets of the world have more than 247
letters (e.g., Ethiopian), it isn't that bad.

Much more interesting are extended features like weighted patterns...
