Thanks.

I have created the package for Ethiopic (please double check if
everything is OK). Before proceeding to replacement of language.ptx
here are some observations about the differences ...

0.) Quite some languages have been added to hyph-utf8 "recentely" and
most are missing in language.ptx, however they should be equally
valid.

1.) In language.ptx there are some weird names (-> language.dat):
- samin -> swedish
- bahasa -> indonesian

2.) in pTeX there are some extra synonyms; are they really needed? (Or
better: if they are, they would probably have to be part of
language.dat as well.)
english hyphen.tex % do not change!
=usenglish
=USenglish
=american
=canadian
ukenglish	ukhyphen-ptex.tex
=UKenglish
=british
=australian
=newzealand

3.1.) Useless for pTeX (but loadhyph-xx.tex works in principle):
% from hyphen-ethiopic:
...
% from hyphen-armenian:
armenian loadhyph-hy.tex
% from hyphen-indic:
assamese loadhyph-as.tex
bengali loadhyph-bn.tex
gujarati loadhyph-gu.tex
hindi loadhyph-hi.tex
kannada loadhyph-kn.tex
malayalam loadhyph-ml.tex
marathi loadhyph-mr.tex
oriya loadhyph-or.tex
panjabi loadhyph-pa.tex
tamil loadhyph-ta.tex
telugu loadhyph-te.tex
% from hyphen-lao:
lao loadhyph-lo.tex
% from hyphen-sanskrit:
sanskrit loadhyph-sa.tex

3.2.) currently not usable in pTeX (fails to work):
% from dehyph-exptl:
german-x-2009-06-19 dehypht-x-2009-06-19.tex
=german-x-latest
ngerman-x-2009-06-19 dehyphn-x-2009-06-19.tex
=ngerman-x-latest

3.3.) I thought it was useless; fishy (loadhyph loads empty patterns)
  coptic copthyph.tex

3.4.) Why extra version of patterns in ptex subfolder? But I would
remove them from language.ptx entirely anyway.
  ibycus ibyhyph.tex

4.) Close inspection needed (but then - I don't believe in polygreek
and ancientgreek patterns in pTeX anyway). I'm not sure if
loadhyph-xx.tex works; needs testing.

greek grphyph4-ptex.tex
=polygreek
monogreek	grmhyph4-ptex.tex
ancientgreek	grahyph4-ptex.tex

i.) I will first wait to get updated TeX Live.
ii.) After resolving 2 and 4 I can fix language.ptx and remove
ptex-specific files [may be done in two steps], but I would prefer if
at least some pTeX user would agree with the changes and test them.
iii.) Optional automatic generation of language.ptx may be postponed
to infinity.
