[tex-hyphen] Puzzling hyphenation with polyglossia and xelatex

I am finding that the first word or first line of my text isn't getting
hyphenated, and I don't understand why.

A minimal input file that exemplifies this is here:

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setmainlanguage{english}
\textwidth=0.1cm
\parindent 0pt
\begin{document}
research research helicopter helicopter
\par\bigskip
helicopter helicopter research research
\end{document}

Why are the first occurrences of "research" and "helicopter" not
hyphenated?

I've played around with all the hyphenation merits and demerits, checked
\uchyph, hyphenmin and max, and whatever else I could think of, but I see
nothing that changes this output, and I don't understand it.

I attach the above .tex file and the output I'm getting from XeLaTeX. (oh,
and my log file for the really keen.)

I'm using TeXlive 2010 (updated this morning) on Ubuntu GNU/Linux 10.10.

Best, and thanks,

Dominik
