	Hello Vladimir,

  Many thanks for all your explanations.  I meant to ask you for
comments long ago, but really didn't have time to.  It's really helpful
when you don't need to guess what every bit of code is supposed to do.

  As I said earlier, it would certainly be feasible to adapt our
pattern-loading strategy to this situation, but I really don't want to
get into this now.  We're too close to the release.

  On the other hand, since it would be stupid to delete a potentially
useful feature from TeX Live, we decided to do the following:

  * 8-bit TeX's should load the original ruhyphen.tex, which they can
    edit according to their needs, just as before.
  
  * UTF-8 TeX's should load ruhyphal.tex, augmented with cyryoal.tex,
    etc. (see below).  Everything converted to UTF-8, obvioulsy.

  This will make the Russian part of hyph-utf8 completely compatible
with ruhyphen for 8-bit engines, and will make Aleksander Lebedev's
patterns available to UTF-8 engines.  It will also clears the points in
your other mail.

  As far as TeX Live packages are concerned, this means that hyph-utf8
will depend on ruhyphen and ukrhyph (since Ukrainian patterns use the
same design); Mojca will write about that.

  Indeed, I have been confused by the comment "the following four lines
are optional" (and also by the fact that there are several patterns
command in a single file).

  I would very much welcome that.  After TeX Live 2008 is out, we can
think about a way to include the hypht?.tex feature into hyph-utf8.
