OK. I will let you do that then, but if you need, I can generate
    those files.

Is it really so easy for you to do so? There are all kinds of weird
aliases in those files which (I suppose) we do not want to remove. I
can't see how you could autogenerate them from the info you have.

    > Looking at your repo, I guess that will now be loadhyph-de-1901.tex and
    > loadhyph-de-1996.tex, respectively? Fine.

Yes. Unless you have some better suggestion for the file names

I like those names.

One more question: what is a better name - ec or t1?

EC seems better to me.

Maybe my favorite being hyph-utf8 or hyph-utf-8.

hyph-utf-8 is ok with me.

(I really like the dash in utf-8, but some may argue against it.)

I wouldn't include it myself, seems superfluous, but I won't argue
against it since you like it. You're doing the work, you get to choose :).

    We need the following:
    - loadhyph/loadhyph-foo.tex (unless someone suggests a better name)
    - conv-utf8/conv-utf8-foo.tex
    - patterns/utf/hyph-foo.tex
    - pattern-loader.tex

So these subdirs (and maybe file) would be what's under
TEXMF/tex/generic/hyph-utf-8 in the runtime tree? Sounds ok to me.

I decided to use a single file for the moment the following reasons:

If Taco's happy, I'm happy.

If you have any name & structure suggestion, let me know -

You still also want TEXMF/source/generic/hyph-utf-8 for the scripts and
such? Unless you don't want to bother distributing them. I'd prefer to
have them, though.

Anyway, please create a draft and I'll comment. It's easier to refine
a real instantation than figure it all out in a void.

Actually, I also need to add a note to all the other converted files.
What should I put on top of those files? We need to tell:
    - who & when converted the file

I'm not sure the "who" is important, but you could just include a `date`
string for the "when" in the autogenerated header. I agree that would
be nice.

    - a note saying: "please do not add any TeX macros to this file"

The note should say "This file was automatically generated, do not edit."
TeX macros or anything else :).

A stupid/tiny detail - we tried to get rid of TeX macros in pattern
files. Do we want \endinput at the end or not?

I never understood the penchant people seem to have for putting
\endinput at the end of various files, so I'd say omit it, but maybe
others on the list can enlighten us.

Maybe we need some contact email?

Yep, contact info is always good, but I wouldn't put an email in the
files; instead I'd put a url, namely http://tug.org/tex-hyphen. One of
us can create a simple web page with pointers to the mailing list, svn
tree, etc.

Thanks,
karl
