*** PNG and TIFF-G4 bitmaps in plain TeX ***

Hi all,

The output formats PDF and DjVu can very efficiently
and very faithfully include PNG and TIFF-G4 bitmaps.

General question: How should a Plain or ePlain TeX user
exploit this talent of PDF and DjVu?

I have not wrestled with the somewhat obscure command
syntax for pdfTeX. It seems the LaTeX programmers have.
But are their macros readily usable from plain TeX?

Several years back I did wrestle briefly with the relevant dvipdfm syntax
and encountered a thicket of bugs.
Is some variant of dvipdfm now adequately debugged?

Are there other solutions worth trying?

Two tips:

--- To get aquainted with DjVu start out at

     http://any2djvu.djvuzone.org

--- If your printer hardware has resolution X pixels per inch,
prepare bitmaps declared at X pixels per inch and somehow
prevent resampling (scaling) by the printer.
This optimizes print quality.
