Alternatively you might want to download and test the development
version ;).  It's here:

  http://tug.org/eplain/src/eplain.tex

It now should work out of box, without any tricks with reading the
.aux file on the part of the user.

Caveat emptor:  this version also contains the modified double-column
macros, so if you have some hard-fought-for double-columns, maybe
you'd want to skip it.
