If you haven't figured that out yet -- the silent commands are the way
to go.
The reason for the line break is a quirk in the workings of TeX's
\input. I think it can also be worked around by putting the indexing
command in an \hbox, but this would not be an option if there are two
words or more in the indexed term (the interword spaces would not
stretch).
