Do you mean that pdfTeX supports MetaPost files "natively"?
I always thought it was implemented as a macro
(\convertMPtoPDF that you mention). \pdfximage doesn't seem
to like MP files.

No, it doesn't require \write18.  As far as I can tell, it
just parses MP files and transforms them into PDF objects
(see supp-pdf.tex).
