    Would \usepackage{autopict} be better?  

I'm not sure.  Can you say a little about the relationship between
picture and autopict?  Do you yourself think it would be better?

BTW, does the new pict2e package happen to work?  (If not, it's not
worth spending time on.  I was just wondering.)
