[tex-eplain] doublecolumns first lines not even

In using eplain 2.8.1 to typeset some one-page articles with a centered,
full width title and the text of the articles in \doublecolumns, I
noticed that the first line of the second column is about a point higher
than the first line of the first column.  Is this a known phenomenon, or
am I doing something wrong?
