I meant to say "I use vi/vim" (as a statement, not a command) - I'm not 
bold/stupid enough to take on the emacs world...

vim has a tex-mode for its 'syntax highlighting' (really 'lexical colouring') feature, 
but no other special support.  There are a few texies using vim with web pages, 
but I think most of the functions and scripts that they have developed are latex-
oriented rather than for plain/eplain - http://sites.netscape.net/BBenjiF/vim/ is one 
such.
