  I remember reading the documentation of a macro package whose goal was
exactly to reduce that redundancy.  I can't remember the name of its
author for sure, but it might have been Werner Lemberg or Frank
Mittelbach, and the package probably had "trac(ing)" or "macro" in its
name.
