Herbert,

   I wondered about this, but that's the way it was in the original file from
2010. So I moved that line, removed the preamble being and end statements,
and now I'm getting the error that,

(/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/article.cls
Document Class: article 2007/10/19 v1.4h Standard LaTeX document class
(/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/size10.clo)) (./path-model-1.aux)

! LaTeX Error: Can be used only in preamble.

   Probably best that I start from scratch and not from this file.
