Doris: On your mac open a terminal window and go to /usr/texbin (cd /usr/texbin)
I use vi but find some way to edit simpdftex. Go to line 167 - if your file is different you are looking for the line with
distillerprog="ps2pdf"
Edit this line to read
distillerprog="ps2pdf14"
Transparency should be on.
Alternatively, cd to /usr/local/bin and cp ps2pdf14 to ps2pdf - that will also work. You might want to make a backup of ps2pdf before you overwrite it.
