Thanks Herbert for your answer,

I copied only the single file pstricks.sty from
http://texnik.dante.de/tex/latex/pstricks/
to
/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/pstricks/pstricks.sty

I.e. I have now version 0.51 of pstricks.sty:

rose at moose:/home/rose/Txt/projects/Test_Project/Report(90)$ grep -C1
ProvidesPackage /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/pstricks/pstricks.sty

\ProvidesPackage{pstricks}
  [2011/08/201 v0.51 LaTeX wrapper for `PSTricks' (RN,HV)]

If I check now the the small spiral.tex without
\usepackage{auto-pst-pdf}, 'ps4pdf spiral.tex' works correctly as
before, while 'pdflatex -shell-escape spiral.tex' with
\usepackage{auto-pst-pdf} fails now with a new error:

FP debug: upn: +++ result of upn-expression is "(0.666666666666666666)"
) ( FP-ROUND ) ( FP-ROUND )
! Undefined control sequence.
<recently read> \c at lor@to at ps

l.26   }

'ps4pdf small_pstricks.beamer.tex' and 'ps4pdf
small_pstricks.article.tex' are failing as before with:

LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in
small_pstricks.beamer-pics.p
df (no BoundingBox).

Herbert, do you have a further hint?
Regards Juergen
