[pstricks] psspan in psmatrix

Acoording to the available documentation, "\psspan" in a "psmatrix" can be 
used to span any number of columns. But then it doesn't seem to go beyond 
two columns, as can be seen in

  \begin{psmatrix}
    A \psspan{4}\\
    B & C & D & E
  \end{psmatrix}	

However,

  \begin{psmatrix}
    \multispan{4} A  \\
    B & C & D & E
  \end{psmatrix}

Works. Am I missing something?
