Thanks for the replies!
Update: The pst-pdf package is a trick bit of kit! But in this case I found
it unnecessary: removing the a4 page option in dvips worked a treat, and
using an .eps file rather than a .jpg (which works with pdfLaTeX) sorted the
logo graphic out.
