I think you are asking for too much.  It is very difficult indeed
for a program to work only with a list of labels and connections
and from that decide where everything should be put on the page.
(Unless the graph is known to be of a particularly simple type
--- like a tree type.)  If you think it is too much trouble to
decide yourself where the nodes should go, I suspect that you are
in trouble.
