[pstricks] PSTricks symbolic or numeric?

I can draw with PSTricks because of all the great examples.
I usually don't understand the math until I get a simpler
version of the object description, or I would only have a
vague sense of how a list of values is used to draw something
like a graph.

In my research group, our physicist uses Mathematica and
describes it as symbolic math.  Our engineer uses Matlab
and describes it as numeric.  Does PSTricks fall toward
either of these category descriptions?
