[pstricks] pdftricks for plain pdftex

For many reasons I often prefer pdftex to pdflatex or context. But there is 
that old problem with pstricks and pdftex. Further, the \pdfoutput switch 
is an all or none proposition. If you turn pdfoutput off (with a negative 
number) then you can use pstricks but you lose facilities such as 
\pdfximage. 

Pdftricks is one option but all the documentation presumes pdflatex. Is 
there a way for the plain pdftex user to make use of its capabilities?
