okay, this sounds as if you havn't installed the MiKTeX engine or 
otherwise its not right connected to TeXnicCenter (be aware, that the 
TeX machine isn't include in TeXnicCenter by default). Therefore:

1. Make sure that you've already installed MiKTeX by having processed 
the steps beginning on page 7 of the manual. In case you're unsure open 
a DOS-Window, type tex and see what happens (you shouldn't receive a 
response like 'Unknown command...')

2. If MiKTeX will be found on your system, perhaps its not correctly 
configured in TeXnicCenter. While you've started TC for the first time, 
did you see the window shown on page 10 of the manual, and have you 
configured 'C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.5\miktex\bin' as directory where 
the executables live?
