       Hmm, it would be useful to find only pdf files within a given directory.

    What do you mean by this?

To find documentation files.  So you'd enter "pstricks", click a button
like "find doc files" (instead of the generic ctan search), and it would
return only pdf (maybe dvi and html too) files within the results.  More
or less (forget the "within a given directory" part):
  grep pstricks filelist | egrep '(pdf|html|dvi)\$'

In the case of pstricks, it wouldn't help that much, since there is no
one obvious doc file (it would return the 50-odd pdf files inside
graphics/pstricks/voss), but in many cases the doc is exactly what
people want.  I've wanted to do doc searches myself.  Maybe I'll program
it one day, or hopefully you'll get there first :).
