So, you found a method to reproduce the issue using plain TeX.

I guess my fault was not to re-create the format file. After re-creating
the format file using the patched pdftex binary (instead of the format
file of the system) the issue is solved.

I've created a binary having a custom banner to check that; I used the
right binary:

hille42 at cfarm203:~$ ./pdflatex 1054218_ppc64_uncomp_20231027.tex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.141592653-2.6-1.40.25 (TeX Live
2023/Debian_1054218) (preloaded format=pdflatex)

Many thanks for all your help. I'll forward the fixed package to the
caller, I hope he can do more tests.

Hilmar
