To be precise, I mean the table that is used by LuaTeX, not the table 
returned by fontloader.to_table(), which is converted to the former. I 
guess you're talking about the same table, that wouldn't make much sense 
otherwise.

Good to know. (I suppose luaotfload does the same, since, as you said, 
the code is imported directly from ConTeXt.)

PS: I'd redirected the OP's message to texhax, under the assumption that
