[pdftex] does TEX destroy valid PDF syntax ?

Well if it can detect the problem, and knows what is wrong,
and is prepared to proceed with the copy --- knowing that by
doing so it is creating something that is technically invalid
anyway --- AND the most useful fix is not that hard really ...

  ... then why not duplicate the object structure from the original
document rather than concatenate a reference with its value.
Surely this is the friendlier action that is more likely to
produce a document that works as intended --- even if still
technically invalid.
