[pdftex] Setting protrusion for two different typefaces.

I have the MS of a novel where some lines end in italics and some 
in roman. I have trouble making protrusion work with both. Here 
is my current code:
\rm
\pdfadjustspacing=2
\input protcode.tex
\pdfprotrudechars=2
\setprotcode\font
\pdffontexpand\rm 20 20 5 autoexpand
\it
\setprotcode\font

This code activates protrusion for \it only. If I delete the last two 
lines then protrusion works for \rm only.  How do I set protrusion 
for both simultaneously?
