[pdftex] Font expansion again

Parts of the Microtypography paper by Han The Thanh no longer apply. 
The following works for me:
 \rm
\pdfadjustspacing=2
\pdfprotrudechars=2
%\input efcode.tex
\input protcode.tex
\setprotcode\font
%\resetefcode\font
\pdffontexpand\rm 20 20 5 autoexpand

Note the lines commented out. They cause errors now.  I use 1.40.5-2.2.
