Turns out I was wrong. :-)

PDF <= 1.4 is limited to 10GB.

If you use compressed object streams (PDF 1.5++,
\pdfobjcompresslevel=3), the size is unlimited (pdftex 1.40.x only
works for <4GiB, though).
