[pdftex] Reference XObjects

Hi,
while implementing LFS support for pdftex, the 10GB limit for PDFs
raised it's ugly head. One way around this are reference XObjects
(PDFRef 4.9.3). Has anybody here ever tried this? Does it work (i.e.
are the proxy and the reference used when they should) with viewers
and RIPs?
