I recommend the just released TeXLive 2007.

PS: Your problem here is that pdfetex is gone. This can be fixed with
texconfig, but upgrading your installation is much easier. And it will
give you the Latin Modern fonts, which are better than cm-super. The
so-called "paleness" will probably remain, though.
