[pdftex] pdftex compilation puzzle

I think you have to link statically and recompile utils.c.
BTW, you cannot use xpdf 3.02 in pdfTeX 1.40.3.
Minor changes are needed in xpdf and/or pdfTeX.
Please wait until Martin releases the next version of pdfTeX.
