I succeeded on MacOSX. However when I moved
build/texk/web2c/pdfetex
build/texk/web2c/pdftex
build/texk/web2c/pdftex.pool
build/texk/web2c/pdftosrc
build/texk/web2c/ttf2afm
to replace binaries and ran (as a root) fmtutil --refresh I got 6
failures; repeating I reduced their number to 3
`pdfetex -ini -jobname=amstex -progname=amstex
-translate-file=cp227.tcx *amstex.ini' failed
`pdfetex -ini -jobname=eplain -progname=eplain
-translate-file=cp227.tcx *eplain.ini' failed
`pdfetex -ini -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex &latex xmltex.ini' failed
My ancient amstex files still compile perfectly, but just as a matter
of health I would like to fix these
I also updated pdftex.def to the latest one and checked that oberdiek,
hyperref, movie15, xkeyval are the latest (according to CTAN). What
else one needs to update to get a full advantage of pdf-1.40.1? I
think some packages when updated (pdfpages? hyperref?) would provide a
definite advantage
Is there an easy demonstration of its edge over 1.30 (like one could
demonstrate an edge of 1.30 over 1.21 by including png with
transparent background)?
Thanks in advance
