So much to do, so little time -- always leave a few surprises for the
rest of us to find.

The build using the patch from the original post worked for me (fc5
linux, tested as far as "fmtutil-sys --all; pdftex story \\end;
pdflate sample2e") using my own
build script (no tests for GNU make, using c99 and a workaround for
the strsep problem).
