The bug appears to have been fixed in some version between 1.21a-2.2  and
1.40.0-beta.  If the last "production" release works (1.30.6?), then
fine.  If not, the user
has to decide whether to live with the bug they know or risk encountering some
bug they they don't know.  The real problem is that little word "try",
which in practice may mean installing a new TeX distribution -- trival
for some, but a month of pain for others.
