depends on your image; for professional printing one needs cmyk and often also high res images and then jpg makes much sense 

we frequently deal with docs where many 10-30 meg color images are to be included; such images are often in tiff format and are converted to pdf beforehand (still big, just a different way of lossless storage); in most cases converting them to medium jpeg (or jpeg compression in pdf)  make them much smaller and no one sees the difference when printed
