Call me an old fart, a sourpuss or what have you ;-) but I'll never 
understand the popularity of wikipedia, esp. among technical people...

Yes, PNG is what I habitually use. As I said in the tread, the recent 
pdftex improvements in PNG handling are the very reason why I wanted to 
upgrade.
