It is the way I always did it, using Ghostscript tools pdf2ps
followed by ps2ascii. But your suggestion of going directly from
pdf to text using pdftotext works, and nothing else does. 

So thanks! You have saved me several hours of cut and paste.
It was so smple I missed it.
