One kind of ugly alternative is to open the .pdf using the Acrobat pdf
plug-in in a web browser --- this keeps it from getting a file lock,
and allows one to retypeset while it's still open. Then, when one
switches back to viewing the .pdf one must remember to hit the refresh
button.
I'm given to understand that there's a new API available in Acrobat 7
which provides hooks which would allow one to make something like to
TeXshop for Windows though.
