I am trying to use pdfetex and have installed the 1.20b version over my
Fedora Core 2 teTex version which had pdftex/pdfetex v1.09b. And I'm
having path problems.
My installation has TEXMFCFG directory as /usr/share/texmf/web2c and
I've put the new pdftex and pdfetex binaries in /usr/bin (overwriting
the previous versions). I put the *.pool files in
/usr/share/texmf/web2c and made a new directory
/usr/local/share/texmf-local to put the new ./texmf/tex directory in.
I modified my /usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf file to show the local
tree at /usr/local/share/texmf-local, did 'texconfig init', and tried
I was not able to get started until I explicitly set the following
setenv TEXFONTMAPS /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config
setenv TEXINPUTS .:/usr/share/texmf/pdftex/plain/misc
And now I can't get past these errors:
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.20b-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)
entering extended mode
! pdfTeX error (ext5): cannot open file for embedding.
\plainoutput ...headline \pagebody \makefootline }
\break ->\penalty -\@M
! ==> Fatal error occurred, the output PDF file is not finished!

What am I doing wrong?
(Note that I have previously had no explicit TEX environment variable
set, but have used LaTeX with no problems for many years. And LaTex
still works afetr all the above.)
