[pdftex] pdfpipe()

Hi:  With pdftex 1.30.0 now having primitives to give it the ability to 
get system-specific information, could it also implement an interface 
that pipes system command output back into the input stream (ala 
\input)?  There are kludge methods that try to do this via \write18{} 
in writing to an external file and then rereading it, but these methods 
really don't work too well; and there is perltex which is dreadfully 
slow.
