transparency is supported in PDF since 1.4 (AR 5).

Many PDF RIPs are just able to handle 1.3. the problem being that
"flattening" transparencies typically implies to generate a bitmap that
won't rip well (screening different from what the RIP computes on vector
graphics, text quality very bad, etc.)
