Time and again I try to do my graphics stuff with open source
stuff, mainly Sketch and the Gimp. Although theoretically they
should be up to the job in some 80% of the cases for my purposes, I
find them just too awkward and primitive compared to Illustrator
and PhotoShop.
I run Linux on a Powerbook. Last time around I gave up once more
on Sketch and ran instead Illustrator on Mac OS 9 under MOL (Mac
On Linux). This worked very well, and at least saved me rebooting,
although it means I am still not weaned from proprietary software.
And SVG just isn't there yet, at least not for Linux. It is not
just a matter of which converters exist, but also what features
they support and how faithfully and reliably.
