[pdftex] Exact placement of objects.

In the DTP program Scribus a graphic object can be placed at 
an exact spot on a page by specifying coordinates.  This is 
handy for things like the bar code block on a book cover 
etc. Similar results are possible with the \rput command in 
PSTricks, assuming one can figure out where the current 
point is. 

Does plain pdftex offer such a placement capability?
