[pdftex] controlling a4/letter from tex?

Hi Karl,
When I set 
\pdfpageheight=500bp in your document, I get

/MediaBox [0 0 595.276 500]

instead of

/MediaBox [0 0 595.276 841.89]

I use version 1.11c from teTeX, but it worked with former versions as well.
