aiui, adobe don't actually care about linux acroread.  (i have asked a
friend to try investigating this impression further.)

the most recent release of acroread for linux (5.0.8) was to deal with a
security issue.  for some reason that my friend doesn't understand, the
code base had acquired the means of ignoring "fit to page" when called
from the command line, so 5.0.8 happened to solve a real problem we had.
