[pdftex] Cannot get \includegraphics to work

I'd recommend using the graphicx package,
which is the successor to graphics.

It works fine for me,
you might have to change the optional arguments, though.
Read the grfguide.ps (should come along 
with your favourite TeX distribution) for that.
