[pdftex] crop marks off page ?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I cannot find a ref to it in
my archives (and would certainly have saved it if I saw it....).

Is it possible to have crop marks outside of the specified page
dimensions such that they do not display when the pdf is read in
reader but do show up when printed to eg letter or a4 paper given
that fit to page is turned off and that the specified page size is
less than eg letter or a4?

If so, how?
