I have the drill down now for preparing downloaded Type1 fonts for
use with pdfetex. Also I have a fistful of interesting type1 fonts
already on my system, such as the Freefont collection that can be
used with Gimp.
Problem is, the additional fonts have a pfb file but no afm file. The
screen-oriented programs like Gimp must extract the afm information
from the pfb file in some way. The pdftex manual doesn't address this
issue. So, is there a utility somewhere that can extract a reasonable
afm file from an existent pfb file?
I asked on comp.fonts but got no helpful answers.
